Abstract: Deepfake technology, driven by advancements in Artificial Intelligence and deep learning, has emerged as a powerful tool capable of creating highly realistic synthetic media. While it offers beneficial applications in entertainment, education, and digital innovation, its misuse poses significant legal and ethical challenges. In India, deepfakes threaten fundamental rights such as privacy, reputation, and personal dignity through misinformation, identity theft, cyber harassment, and non-consensual content creation. Existing legal frameworks, including the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, provide limited safeguards against such misuse. This study examines the legal implications of deepfake technology, Challenges and highlights the need for a dedicated regulatory framework to address emerging cyber risks.
